Luc woke several hours later to find the sun setting and Kimberley gone.
He felt a flicker of something that he didnât recognise. Disappointment, he decided immediately, rejecting the opportunity to examine his emotions in more detail.
The most explosive sex of his entire life had left him feeling refreshed and invigorated and more than ready to appreciate the woman who had been part of the experience.
Was it surprising that he felt disappointed that she wasnât still lying in his arms?
He sprang out of bed, noted the abandoned handcuffs with an appreciative male smile, and reached for a pair of casual trousers.
He found her by the pool, her expression pale and strained, her mobile phone in her hand.
The tension in her slender frame stopped him dead. âIs something wrong?â
After what theyâd shared, heâd expected to find her relaxed and smiling, recovering her energy levels in the sun, ready for the next bout of lovemaking. Instead she gave a start and shot him a guilty look before stuffing the phone back in her bag. âNothingâs wrong.â
More unfamiliar emotions boiled up inside him. âWho were you calling?â
She dipped her head, her long fiery hair concealing her expression from him. âJust a friend.â
A friend?
Luc felt the sharp claws of jealousy dig into his flesh. What sex was the âfriendâ? Had she been talking to another man? What was her life like when she was at home? Did she date? Had she tied another man to the bed and rendered him unable to think?
He realised with no small degree of discomfort that, although heâd spent weeks in bed with this woman, he knew next to nothing about her, and suddenly he was driven by a burning desire to discover everything.
âWeâre dining on the terrace tonight,â he said firmly as she glanced up at him, clearly as startled by hearing this unusual announcement as he had felt making it. âAnd weâre going to talk.â
She blinked and her lips parted. Those perfectly shaped lips that had driven him wild only hours earlier.
Resolutely Luc pushed the thought away. He wasnât going to think about that now. The same instincts that had made him an unbeatable force in business were currently telling him that something wasnât right about this situation. And he intended to make it right. He had a sudden burning need to see her smiling again. The reason why he should suddenly feel the urge to make a woman happy outside the bedroom didnât occur to him as he searched his brain for an answer.
Obviously she wasnât short of sex, so the problem couldnât possibly lie there. Just to confirm that fact, his mind ran speedily through the time theyâd spent together and he concluded with a warm feeling of masculine satisfaction that she definitely couldnât be feeling unappreciated in that department.
Which meant that the problem must lie elsewhere.
Romance.
With a sudden burst of clarity, he identified the reason for her long face.
Perhaps the last two weeks had been a little too bedroom focused, he conceded. Wasnât it true that women needed different things to men? Apparently whole books had been written on the subject.
